Our last shipment for spring from Cheap Monday has arrived. This last batch is mostly made up of their Kostym label, an offshoot dedicated to the notion that tailoring and sharp silhouettes ought to be affordable, too. Basic jacket, $155

Need a suit for spring? The Basic jacket is a one-button, peak-lapel jacket that smartly goes from day at the office to night on the town. A polyester/viscose blend gives it a great spring/summer weight that won't hang too heavy on the body but won't feel flimsy, either.

Mod pant, $110

Can't have a suit without a great pair of pants to go along with it. Cut from the same fabric as our Basic Jacket, these pants have a slim leg that keeps your whole ensemble looking wonderfully modern and clean.

The classic white shirt, redefined. Narrows cuffs and a slightly shrunken collar give the basic dress shirt a fantastic update. Single box pleat at the back, custom stamped buttons, and included collar stays.

Marquez jacket, $290

Love leather bombers? Hate dry cleaning bills and the hassle of spot cleaning? How does a machine washable, waxed cotton version sound, then? This season, the Marquez comes in a 100% cotton outer with a distressed waxed finished that gives it structure and texture. A full polyester lining and ribbed neck lining provide comfort and extra warmth. Ribbing at the cuffs and hem make this fit nice and snug. With zippers and flaps all over the front, the Marquez has a 8 total pockets. Heavy-duty zip front closure.

St. Augustine jacket, $264

The St. Augustine is a great casual cotton jacket with a full cotton lining that has gone through a great washing and aging process for a jacket that's soft to the touch but still has plenty of shape. Zip front with heavy duty snap storm placket. On the front there are two snap-down flap pockets and three besom pockets. Ribbed cuff and drawstring at hem for fit. Drawstring hood with inset neck to keep your neck toasty. Darted and pieced construction all throughout.

Austen plaid shirt, $141

Crinkled, soft cotton in a subtle brown plaid give the Austen a lived-in look. But, as always, the details are what make this shirt more than a shirt. A double-row of buttons allows for a looser or tighter fit, depending on which set you use. Button-down flap besom pocket at the chest. Double-button barrel cuffs.

Sir Lawrence cardigan in charcoal, $180

The Sir Lawrence falls somewhere between a cardigan and a jacket: the heavy knit with ribbed cuffs and hem say it's a cardigan, but the canvas inserts at the shoulder, placket, and pockets say it's a jacket. The perfect combination of slouch and structure, the Sir Lawrence has an extended heavy-duty snap placket for a high-neck look, but looks just as good draped and left unbuttoned.

A parka to end all parkas. Although it's tough to see in the picture, the Kierkegaard is done in a thick, combed cotton that has an almost suede-like hand to the fabric. Drawstring at waist, front hem, and back hem for fit. Two large flap pockets on front. Fulling lined.

Don't know if you've noticed, but lately, it's gotten pretty chilly around Oakland. To the rescue comes Triple Five Soul's Lexington jacket. They suggest that you wear their jeans for at least 6 months without washing in order to break them in to their fullest for a pair that fits your body and no one else's.

A Dapper exclusive! We loved the Boy fit — a classic cut straight leg with a mid-rise front and back — and asked what washes were available. To our surprise, the folks at Farmer were willing to produce a run in a super soft and smooth fabric. It may feel like it's got stretch in there, but these are 100% pure cotton. White stitching throughout for a subtle finish.

A slim straight leg for guys who want a good pair of everyday jeans, the Glory fit is similar to the Boy, with a slimmer cut through the thigh down the leg. Done in a classic raw blue, the Glory features two color contrast stitching on the pocket.

All Farmer Industry jeans have logo embroidery along the back waist with an embroidered rat celebrating the year of the rat, according to the Chinese zodiac.

Although these jeans are not made using selvedge denim, all inseams are finished with purple and red thread.

If you’re expecting some extreme weather, the Nassau Bomber has got you covered — literally. A double lined bomber jacket with an interior elasticized, snap hem, elastic shoulder straps, and double sleeve for the warmest, snuggest fit available. Add in a faux fur-lined removable hood, pockets for you pocket, earbuds, ID, and just about everything else you’d possibly need to carry for a jacket as useful as it is warm. There are literally pockets everywhere: six on the chest, one on the left sleeve, and two more inside.

Architecture long-sleeve polo, $108

Refined, but with an edge, the Architecture polo sweater has everything you’d expect (ribbed hems, three-button placket, raglan sleeves) and more. Variegated stripes at the arms add a cool graphic touch while a hidden buttonhole and button underneath the collar let you button all the way up for when it gets chilly.

How Dapper Does Fall

The days are getting shorter and cooler (if you haven't already noticed), and in the store we're all beginning to bundle up. Here's a selection of some of our favorite things for fall.

Layers

If we're obsessed with anything, it's layering. This fall, even layers go luxe with super soft fabrics and detailed construction. Artificial Flavor's T-neck ($75) updates the standard waffle knit henley with an extended placket and extra seaming. Take your favorite hoodie, add ultra-soft organic Supima cotton and you've got B. Son's shawl collar hoodie ($103). Or you can stand out in the crowd with Orthodox's Kipling shirt, a cool blend of soft knit and structure woven fabrics ($149).

Coats

There's really nothing better than throwing on your favorite warm, thick coat right before you head out into the cold. But if you're tired of your plain peacoats and ordinary overcoats, we've got plenty of new options. The first thing we noticed about Orthodox's Chaucer coat ($286) was the cool dip-dye treatment, but there's tons to this garment, including a one-and-a-half breasted front, zippered sleeves, and quilted lining. With three fits (Classic, Edward, and Slim), there's bound to be something for every guy for every occasion. The first pieces of our Converse by John Varvatos shipment have arrived. This fall's collection is all about tailored comfort and it certainly shows in the construction and detailing. As always, Varvatos works the Converse heritage into garments that showcase his eye for classic American sportswear.

Waxed cotton filled jacket, $295

If you're looking for that one jacket to last you through the cold season, this might just be it. The exterior is a quilted waxed cotton with a lightweight, but very warm, polyester fill. The sheer number of details on this jacket is ridiculous: customized zipper-pulls, front double-zip closure, two interior pockets, welt side pockets, zip and snap-closed front chest pocket, different lining for the torso and the arms, knit cuffs and side inserts. The arm has special construction to allow for full movement without pulling at the back. We've only got a few of these, so get them now before it's too late. Color is a deep, dark brown.

The love and thought that goes not only into the graphics, but the production and packaging really shows and these have easily become some of our newest favorite tees.

Selectism: Run by streetwear gurus who started HighSnobiety, Selectism is a near-daily blog with a focus on breaking news with up and coming brands.

Material Interest: Men.Style.com isn't just a resource for the latest menswear shows or updates on seasonal trends. Their blog is a guy's guide to everything, from food and art to tech and toys.

Refinery29: Although they do cover women as well, Refinery29 is always a great source for fashion ranging from the down-to-earth to the avant-garde. Check the Pipeline, their blog, for the latest word on culture and clothes on the East Coast.

Our neighbor, Form Vintage Modern, just received a pair of beautiful mid-century platform benches designed by George Nelson, one of the founders of American modernism. Manufactured in 1950 by the Steel Frame Group, the black wood/steel frame has been meticulously restored by hand along with new white leather cushions.

Leather For Dummies

Given the recent influx of leather that we've received, we thought it'd be handy to give you guys a primer for all the leather lingo we sling around the store.

Full-grain leather: Also known as top grain; the top layer of animal skin, with only the hairs removed and no extra treating, preserving as much fiber strength as possible. Unlike treated leathers, full-grain leather develops a patina over time. Translation? The more you wear it, the better it'll look.

Items made of full-grain: Tanner wallets and cardholders

Latigo leather: A separated layer of leather, resulting in suede. Further treatment with glue and rollers produces a leather with full-grain finish on one side and suede on the other.

Items made of latigo: Tanner belts

Patent leather: Leather coated with plastic or oil for high-gloss. There are non-leather textiles that resemble patent leather, but don't be fooled. Over time, the coating will wear down, producing a matte, rubber-y finish.

Items made of patent: PF Flyers Glide in black, Albin in grey and in black

Aniline leather: Aniline is a chemical dye. Treatment with aniline produced a leather that is rarely dyed and has a soft, supple feel. Aniline leathers are particularly useful for their breathability, for materials that can be worn during hot and cold seasons.

'Round the Bay: Oakland Lakefest

Located on Lakeshore Avenue the festival runs from 11 in the morning to 6 in the evening both nights and is an extravaganza of local food and art. Art, Front and Center

We've been getting a ton of passer-bys stopping and staring at the art installation in our front window. All three pieces are the work of Larry Baumiller, a local artist who specialized in wearable art, sculpture, toys, and puppets. These pieces are the culmination of hours of work and not a single tie has been cut to fit. Larry's work is going to be exhibited throughout the weekend, but will be leaving the store on Monday. If you haven't had a chance to take a closer look, we suggest dropping by.

Our eagerly awaited shipment of Tanner leather goods has finally arrived. Using only the finest, sturdiest full-grain and latigo leathers, the Tanner guys cut, sew, and assemble every single piece by hand in Portland. All items are branded by hand for assured authenticity.

The original Tanner standard belt is made out of 8/9 oz. latigo leather. Extraordinarily tough, these belts will feel still at first, but will soften and develop a beautiful natural patina with wear. Yesterday, the New York Times' Jim Larkin wrote a piece about button stances, talking about the extremes between dressing like Fabio and Steve Urkel. Luckily, all of our shirts occupy a very comfortable middle ground, as you can see from our Apolis Activism Military Woven.

Unlike sleeve length or fit around the chest, there's no way for your tailor to change the button stance on a shirt, so the next time you come in to try stuff on, double-check to make sure that you like how you look buttoned up and undone.
